Arizona State University (ASU) BIO 345 Evolution Exam 2 Practice

The correct answer highlights that climate, food availability, and competition all play significant roles in influencing evolution. These ecological factors create the environment in which species must adapt or face extinction.

Climate conditions can dictate what types of organisms can survive in a particular habitat, influencing the traits that are advantageous for survival and reproduction. For example, changing temperatures or precipitation patterns can select for traits that improve water retention in plants or heat tolerance in animals.

Food availability directly affects the survival and reproductive success of organisms. Species that are better adapted to finding or utilizing available resources are more likely to thrive and pass on their genes, leading to evolutionary changes over generations.

Competition for resources, whether it be food, shelter, or mates, drives natural selection. Species that compete for similar resources may diverge in traits over time, leading to adaptations that reduce competition and allow for specialization.

Thus, the interaction of these factors creates a dynamic evolutionary landscape where species must constantly adapt to the challenges posed by their environment.
